Tsunami l Science

Aim : To make a tsunami simulator.

Equipment : Sand, Water, Pospicle sticks, String, Tape, Skewers and newspaper.

Method : Fill a plastic tub up with half sand and half water, Then we made some houses with the rest of the materials, Then one by one, we tested the houses by rocking the water in diffrent levels.

Research : A tsunami is a series of waves caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic eruptions.

Discussion : The second build stayed up the longest. We are not sure why.

Conclusion : Yes it did work, No I would change anything

The Trolley Problem

 The Trolley Problem.

There are five people stuck on a railway track. You have the option to flick a switch and divert the train to another track, Problem is, There is one person stuck on that track. So what would you do? Well I would kill the five people.

The reason I would kill the five people is because if you killed the one you would get charged of murder. If I kill the five it will not be my fault and I didnt kill them. If I kill the one I would know that I killed him and everyone else would know. Even if i didn't get charged with muder ( Even though I would ) People would 100% protest it and I would eventually get some type of punishment. 

So that's why I would kill the five instead of one. What do you think? Would you save the five and kill the one or wouldn’t you? Why not? Thank you for reading.

Social Studies - What Have I Learnt

What did the video encourage us to think about? 

That we have to protect our oceans and actually protect our sea life. 

That we have to try and help clean up rubbish so it doesn’t end up in our oceans. Everyday minutes more rubbish goes into our oceans and it's killing our whales, dolphins, turtles etc. When our whales reach the surface of the water for air they release these particles called phytoplankton and it releases oxygen for us to breathe. 85% of our oxygen comes from whales and if they die then our ocean dies then so do we. So much sea life gets washed up on our beaches because of how much plastic they are filled up with. 

What do you think about this?

That this is a huge problem and our generation needs to do something about it. Some of my own thinking is that we need to start putting rubbish in the correct bins, making sure it doesn’t get dropped or fly out of the bin. 

What is something that you could do to reduce pollution?

Put rubbish in the correct bins, don’t drop rubbish on the ground,  

Testing For Hydrogen Gas

Testing for Hydrogen Gas 

Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Method: 

1. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2ml of acid.

2. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.

3. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas.

4. When you think the tube is full, Mr Heath should light the wooden splint.

5. Carefully, but quickly, tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Results:

It made a popping sound.

Discussion: 

When the reactants (Metal + Acid) mixed together it resulted in two products (Metal Salt + Hydrogen). Because we trapped the Hydrogen gas into the test tubes it started to heat up and bubble. Because of this we knew that it was ready to have the splint put into it. When the splint was put in the test tube it reacted with the Hydrogen gas resulting in the popping sound.

Conclusion:

The experiment worked because the end result was a popping sound. I wouldn't change anything.   

Neutralisation

Neutralisation

Aim: To observe a neutralisation reaction.

Method: 

1. Get a test tube rack, 6 test tubes, acid, base and universal indicator.

2. Fill 4 test tubes with 3mL of acid.

3. Fill 2 test tubes with 3mL of base.

4. Add a squirt of universal indicator to each.

5. Add different amounts of acid and base to make the colours of the rainbow (ROYGBI)

Results: 

Discussion: 

We started with 4 red test tubes and 2 blue test tubes, but by the end of the experiment we ended up with  colours of the rainbow (ROYGBI). We did this by neutralizing some of the acid by adding base into it to make orange, yellow, and green. For the 1 of the base we add acid to make it a lighter shade of blue. 

Conclusion:

This experiment did work because we were able to neutralise the acids and bases to make the colours of the rainbow.

What was the song about?

The song is about Paul McCartney going on tour and missing his girlfriend at the time, Jane Asher. It talks about how he will remember his girlfriend and how they kissed. It talks about how he will miss his girlfriend when he leaves and that he will write to her while he is away. It also talks about how he will be true to his girlfriend, meaning he will be faithful toward her and not be with another woman. Lastly, it states he will send all his love to his girlfriend too. 

How does it sound different from songs in the 1940's?

All My Loving, along with the majority of other Beatles songs caused extreme controversy and anger among the older generation. This generation didn't like the challenge from the youth and breaking of the status quo. These songs sexualised women, something which had never been seen before The Beatles and the Swingin' 60's.

The songs were essentially the voice to the younger generation, who felt repressed and therefore wanted to break away from the traditional ways of their parents. They wanted to break away from traditional clothes, music and language. 

The parents of these young girls were appalled and disgusted that songs were being sung about them. They didn't like these sexualised songs which had started spreading like wildfire, making their children, especially daughters go crazy. 

Songs in the 1940's were polar opposites to those in the era of The Beatles. For example, Swinging on a Star by Bing Crosby (1944) was about animals and how they looked, so they differed, A LOT.

Testing PH Experiment

Aim: To test the pH of a range of household chemicals.

Method:

Add a few drops of each chemical toa spot on your spotting tile. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.

1. Test the chemicals with litmus paper.

2. Test each chemical with a few drops of Universal indicator.
