Organs - Science

Hello, in science we have been learning about the digestive organs, and how they work. Ingestion is the consumption of a substance by an organism. In animals, it normally is accomplished by taking in a substance through the mouth into the gastrointestinal tract; such as through eating or drinking. In single-celled organisms, ingestion takes place by absorbing a substance through the cell membrane.

Egestion- Egestion is the act or process of voiding or discharging undigested food as feces. To egest means to discharge undigested material or food.

Digestion-Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water-soluble food molecules so that they can be absorbed into the watery blood plasma. In certain organisms, these smaller substances are absorbed through the small intestine into the bloodstream.

x

Absorption-

Digestion is the chemical breakdown of the ingested food into absorbable molecules. Absorption refers to the movement of nutrients, water, and electrolytes from the lumen of the small intestine into the cell, then into the blood.

Teeth-

Food is broken down into smaller pieces in the mouth by chewing. This is an example of mechanical digestion. The teeth cut and crush food, and the pieces are mixed with saliva to form a ball of food called a bolus.

Large intestine -

The large intestine (colon or large bowel) is about 5 feet long and about 3 inches in diameter. The colon absorbs water from wastes

Esophagus -

Anatomically and functionally, the esophagus is the least complex section of the digestive tube. Its role in digestion is simple: to convey boluses of food from the pharynx to the stomach. The esophagus begins as an extension of the pharynx in the back of the oral cavity.

Stomach -

The stomach secretes acids and enzymes that digest food. Ridges of muscle tissue called rugae line the stomach. The stomach muscles contract periodically, churning food to enhance digestion. The pyloric sphincter is a muscular valve that opens to allow food to pass from the stomach to the small intestine

Anus -

The anus is the opening at the far end of the digestive tract through which stool leaves the body. The anus is formed partly from the surface layers of the body, including the skin, and partly from the intestine. The anus is lined with a continuation of the external skin.

Liver -

The liver is an organ about the size of a football. It sits just under your rib cage on the right side of your abdomen. The liver is essential for digesting food and ridding your body of toxic substances. Liver disease can be inherited (genetic).

Rectum -

The rectum is the concluding part of the large intestine that terminates in the anus. The average length of the human rectum may range between 10 and 15 cm. Its diameter can be compared to that of the sigmoid colon (the part of the large intestine nearest the rectum)

Small intestine -

The small intestine or small bowel is an organ in the gastrointestinal tract where most of the end absorption of nutrients and minerals from food takes place. It lies between the stomach and large intestine and receives bile and pancreatic juice through the pancreatic duct to aid in digestion.

Health - Cocaine Research

Over the last 8 periods of health we ( Me and Tamani ) have been learning about cocaine. The reason we picked to learn about cocaine is because cocaine is a serious problem that people severly suffer from. I thought that this could possibly help other people and educate them on why you shouln't use cocaine.

In conclusion I learnt a lot about cocaine and how bad it is for your body and mental health. Just to clear up I do not condone the usage of cocaine.

REFLECTION -

In reflection I liked learning about cocaine. Although it was challenging trying to get all the information and make sure that it was all correct it was also fun. I think me and Tamani both worked quite well due to the fact that we had worked toghether multiple times and were also friends.

Heart Dissection

Heart Dissection

What Have We Been Learning About?

In science we have been learning about the heart. The reason we have been learning about the heart is to get a better understanding of whats inside the heart.

Why Did We Dissect The Heart?

We were dissecting the heart so we could get a better understanding of the main parts of the heart ans how the heart works.

What Are The Parts Of The Heart?

The main parts of the heart we saw were the ventricle, valve, atrium.

Did You Enjoy Dissect The Heart?

No, It was yuck.

Sustainability Essay

The worldwide problem, climate change

Climate change is a major issue that is increasing rapidly. This is not good

because it affects humans, plants and animals. Climate change affects our l

ives, it makes living difficult for everyone from everywhere.

As you can probably tell, Climate change is pretty bad. Sadly us humans are

the reason for it. Deforestation. Humans have been cutting down trees rapidly

over the last 10 - 20 years to clear land for more building, what we haven't

realised is we are affecting ourselves and other living things such as animals

and plants. This affects humans, animals and plants because with the severity

of climate change the weather is extremely bad and it drowns the plants and

ruins the natural food for animals and humans. It also makes living harder like

I said.

Climate change impacts our lives more than you would think. Part of the reason

it may seem really hot could be because of climate change. Drought and insect

breakouts are also related to climate change. There are also some more that

include increased wildfires, Declining water supplies, reduced agricultural yields

, health impacts in cities due to heat, and flooding. Climate change also affects

the air. It can make the air less healthy for humans to breathe.

Luckily there are some things we can do to try and reverse climate change.

Reduce, reuse, recycle. Reduce means to minimize the amount of waste we

create. Reuse means to use something more than once. Recycle means to use

things that have already been used in a different way.

In summary climate change is obviously really bad. But if we start trying to

make a change we will be able to prevent climate change from getting any

worse.
